Van. Province received a news release from San Francisco re 3 Chinese "Gambling Kings" from Van. were on a U.S. Passenger ship running between San Francisco and Shanghai. Those 3 Van. Chinese were trying to start up gambling business during the 18 day journey back home. There were over 900 Chinese passengers onboard. The police in Van. had little comment on the news. But they said the gambling business in Van. had subsided. Freemason - article on history of Freemason. Divisional Head Quarter H.Q. Branch ; Sub-branch Even though the Divisional H.Q. was the highest authority in Canada, the sub-branches were the 'ancestors' of Freemason Associations in Canada, i.e. they were the 1st Hung Man orga izations in Canada which led to the formationof branches and lastly to the Head Branch. The 1st sub-branch was in , (i.e- ), which was originally a gold-mining town. In 1862, the mining company allowed Chinese to take part in gold mining, and many Chinese from the States, started the gold rush to Canada. Since CKT had great influence in the States, , a Kai-ping Freemason (who had played important part in anti- Ching revolution in 1854), brought with him a Freemason flag when he came to In the gold mine, he and some enthusiastic friends stafted the CKT. In 1863, the 1st CKT in Canada was officially set up in . Concurrently, a Chinese Freemason , who was also from the States arrived he then cooperated with to prosper the associaion. Later , went to and established CKT in 1871; afterwards CKT spread to New Westminster (1884), Victoria (1886) and then gradually many sub-branches were set up. For better coordination, administration, in each province, the largest sub-branch which was situated in the most convenient and strategic place was chosen to be the branch. In each branch, there would be administrators to control and direct the affairs of the neighbouring sub-branches, it wlso settled disputes. Originally, the administrative unit was by Province, later it was changed to district. In 1939, during the 9th cross-Canada General Convention, Canada was divided into 6 districts. No. 1 - Vict., C.K. H.Q. which controlled Duncan, Nanaimo, Kimberley, , Cumberland, etc. District #2 - Victoria CKT as head, controlling New Westminster, , Chilliwack, Hammond, ( ), Prince Rupert, Prince George, etc. District #3: Vernon CKT as head - controlling Kelowna, Revelstoke (which was recently closed down due to the dep arture of members for other cities for better jobs), Kamloops, Armstrong, Princeton, , , Penticton, etc. District #4: Nelson CKT as head - controlling Rossland, Trail, , Cranbrook, Fernie, etc. District #5: Calgary CKT was chosen to be head, but later changed to Lethbridge which controlled - Calgary, Medicine Hat, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, District #6: Toronto as head, controlling Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec, Hamilton, London, , Halifax, etc. Initially the highest authorizational department was CKT IN Victoria which was the hxgksxx Divisional Head Quarter of Hung Man in Canada. In 1929, during the 5th cross Canada Generl Convention in Cumberland, it was decided to set up a Hung Man Head Bureau to unify administration thus selecting Vancouver as head bureau ( ). In 1937, during the 8th cross Canada General Convention in Winnipeg (in 1935, there was the Hung Man General Convention), it was decided to change the name to In 1945, an order was received from the New York Chee Kong H.Q. which stated that during the American Continent General Convention on March 11, (when Canada also sent , ) it was decided all CKT in the continent should be called Chung Kuo Hung Man Chee Kong Dong. Thus the name for the chief Hung Man organization had to be changed from to Chung Kuo Hung Man Chee Kung Dong Divisional Head Quarter of Canada ( ) which was subordinated to the CKT H.Q. in New York. The sign board would be hung on October 10th. In 1946, the H.Q. from the States informed delegates should be sent back to Chin a to organize Head Party Division ( ), and to prepare the 5 continents Hung Man General Convention. The Hung Man in Canada chose and to attend the general convention. On Sept. 1, Chung Kuo Hung Man Freemasons Central Party was officially set up in Shanghai. Then, the branches all over theworld were asked to change the name to Chung Kuo Hung Man Freemason Party. And the association in Canada changed the name on Jan. 1, 1947 and the Divisional Head in Canada became subordinate to the Central party in China. The H.Q. in the States was also changed to a divisional H.Q. subordinating to the Central party in China. Van. Dart Coon Club - meeting would be held on April 2. Consul General in Van announced a release from the Treasury Department in China about the necessity to exchange money in Chinese banks so as to avoid money loss. CBA Van. - wanted to promote anti-smoking/opium activities The Overseas Chinese Affairs Cttee also encouraged the overseas Chinese to set up Anti-smoking associatio under the jurisdiction of the Chinese Consuls. It was hoped that more anti-smoking associations could be formed. Chinese Veteran Association held a ceremony on Feb. 19 to accept Canadian citizenship. That was a charity party and over $1100 was raised for Canadian Aid to China. More gambling joints in Chinatown were searched and closed down by the police. 50 years ago, i.e. 1897, March 29, the Chinese in Van. had already tried to set up a theatre in Chinatown.
