Many people were aroused at this and they protested thatthe unemployed whites could replace the Chinese workers. The city councileven forced the fruit growers to employ white workers. The president of the Fruit Growers' Association pointed out that there were altogether only 35 Chinese workers and the experienced whites were usually chosen first. The Chinese were employed because they were reliant and hardworking. However for the past 2 years the majority of the farmers preferred white workers to the Chinese ones.
