No. 14: the original term was that all Chinese immigrants who were over 15 and who were illiterate would be sent back to China. The suggested revision was that this term should not apply to the following types of immigrants: (a) those who had already got Canadian citizenship; (b) Those who had been staying in Canada before the new regulation was enforced, even though they were women and no matter that they were Canadian citizens or not; (c) the wives of the new immigrants who were subject to the new regulations;#9. The original term was that all illegal immigrants could enter Canada upon the approval of the head immigration officer, however, the stay was restricted to a limited period of time after which the head immigration of- ficer would inform the illegal immigrant whether he had to leave or an extension of his stay was made. The suggested revision was to add in the term which stated that permanent residence could be issued to illegal im- migrants by the head immigration officer.#10. No . 2. The original term was that when the illegal immigrants were on trial, court hearing was permitted only upon the approval of the head immigration officer. The suggested revision was that the offender should be given 48 hours to hire a lawyer to defend him. The head immigratio officer could extend the time limit if he found that there was insufficient time.P3 5) The CBA of New Westminster held a general meeting on June 19 to discussthe telegram sent by the representatives in Ottawa. It was suggested that those immigrants who came to Canada after 1917 by using the status of merchant but were by no means doing any business would have to pay back the head tax. The members present in the meeting wre all against such an extra tax payment.
