The Immigration Department had given a report to theParliament, saying that there was a shart decrease of the number of Chinese immigrants in 1923. Since 1912, there was an average of 2294 Chinese coming into Canada annually. However, there were only 710 Chinese coming over last year which made a decrease of 69%. From 1912 to 1923, $1,048,960 head tax was incollected. It was in 1904 that the head tax was increased to$500 /immigrant. There was also a report on the cases of Chinese immigrants moving to the Sfeates after coming to Canda. According to the report ofof a U.S. inspector, many Chinese immigrants from Canada came to U.S.annually to engage in the hocusing construction business. After that, theywould move back to Canada. Only 30% of them stayed permanently in U.S.1922 was the year when many farmers moved into the U.S., however some wentback to the Prairies soon after they found out that Canada was more suitableto them.
