March 16th, ThursdayP.3 5 whites, 17 Chinese and 1 Japanese were arrested for smuggling into the States. It was reported that 2 outboards were used each time to smuggle about 20 persons; and such smugglings were carried out 20 times annually. The cost for smuggling 1 person was $300; one can of opium for $2.50. It was said that all Chinese and opium were smuggled from Vancouver. In 4 years time, the smugglers had already profited $280,000 and smuggled $1,800,000 worth of opium into the states.(2) A public health committee would be sent to investigate the sanitary conditions in Chinatown.(3) The Vancouver Chinese Christain Association was able to raise $92.20 for the Chinese Red Cross. They announced on March 13th that they had already sent the funds back to China
