The Chinese times
The Chinese times (Vancouver, B.C.)
March 30th. Friday P.2-31. There was a meeting of the labour union to decide upon exclusion of Chinese fruit-pickers. Originally, the fruit produce association suggested letting more Chinese farm workers enter Canada for farm work because the Chinese were more honest, hardworking and willing to accept low pay. However, the labour union suggested displacing the Chinese workers hy with unemployed females (whites)(eg. those from Y.W.C.A.) Later the fruit produce association promised to dismiss all Chinese workers if they could recruit 3000 female white workers. (There was eventually a committee established to recruit female workers, and it was reported that 50 female workers had already registered.)2. News from Manitoba: The law that prohibited Chinese employmentof female whites had spread from Saskatchewan to Manitoba. Ambassador Yeung had tried his best to negotiate the case with the authorities in Ottawa
